A blast at a gold mine in the southwestern African country of Burkina Faso has killed at least 60 people and injured more than 100 others.

According to foreign media reports, the explosion at a gold mine in Burkina Faso may have been caused by a stockpile of chemicals used in gold refining.

Burkina Faso is one of the largest gold producers in Africa, with about 800 mines.

The rescue team recovered the bodies of 60 miners from the wreckage while 100 people buried under the wreckage were rushed to the hospital in critical condition where more than a dozen people are in critical condition and are being kept in the intensive care unit.

Police say it was an illegal mine where the increase in casualties after the incident was due to lack of precautionary measures and safety measures.
