Ghazipur: Muslims in India continue to be harassed by Hindu extremists.
A video of Hindu extremists violating the sanctity of a mosque in the village of Gahmar in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur city has gone viral on social media. The video shows a group of Hindu extremists holding saffron flags around the mosque. The people in the crowd are not only chanting slogans of "Ja Shri Ram" but also dancing in a terrifying manner on and around the mosque.
Azmi Parveen, a social activist from Lucknow, shared the video on her Twitter account and wrote that the incident took place on April 2 when Sunita Singh, a former MLA of the Bharatiya Janata Party, staged a rally.
Explaining the details of the video to the media, Azmi Parveen said that initially it was said that the video belonged to Crowley in Rajasthan where there were reports of sectarian clashes. But a resident of Gehmar village told Azmi that the video was not of Crowley but of his village.
Azmi said the person who told about the video was a student and was so scared that he did not want to reveal his identity and was not ready to talk to the media about it for fear of being targeted.
According to Azmi Parveen, Muslims live in small numbers in Gahmar village. They were all afraid to talk about the incident and no one has come forward to lodge a complaint against the incident and the accused. Azmi said Muslim shopkeepers in the village are often harassed by locals, mostly Hindus. He vowed to go to Gumhar village to find out the truth about the attack on the mosque, which could also be targeted.
Azmi said that after the video was shared on his Twitter account, the police started patrolling around the mosque. The most frightening thing is that people involved in the violence at the place of worship are questioning Azmi, but Azmi says that she will continue to raise her voice against the incident till the culprits are punished.
Responding to social activist Azmi Parveen's tweet, Ghazipur police said that no complaint has been registered against the incident. However, the rural SP of Ghazipur has been asked to investigate the video. Police have assured that if any culprit is found during the investigation, he will be severely punished.
The Ghazipur SP said that he had taken notice of the incident and registered a case against the unidentified persons under section 153 (a) of the IPC.
Murtaza Ansari, a local resident, said the incident took place when a group of Hindutva activists staged a rally on the occasion of Hindu religious festival Nooratri. When the rally reached the southern part of the village, some people participating in the rally waved saffron colored flags on the mosque and chanted slogans of J. Shri Ram. The crowd in the mosque for 5 minutes sprayed paint on the mosque.
